Understanding Farm Size: Hectares vs. Acres and the Key to Profitability

A hectare of land is 100m by 100m, with a total area of 10,000 square meters. This is equivalent to 2.47 acres. In other words, one hectare of land is approximately 2.47 acres.

An acre of land, on the other hand, is any land size that measures around 4,047 square meters. Therefore, a farmer with 10 hectares of land would have approximately 24.7 acres.

The standard internationally recognized measurement for land is the hectare (10,000 square meters).

It's essential to note that profitability on a farm is not determined by the number of hectares or acres. You could cultivate 10 hectares of maize, but a farmer with only 2 hectares of maize might have a higher harvest yield if their farming practices and crop management are more effective. Ultimately, the crop yield is determined by the quality of the land, the type of crop, and the farming practices, not just the size of the land.
